The use of laryngeal mask airway for tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy
Patients undergoing tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy traditionally receive anesthesia with endotracheal intubation (ETT) for airway management.
Laryngeal mask airway(LMA) was successfully developed and used in clinic in the mid-1980s, and was introduced into China in the 1990s. Great progress has been made in the use of laryngeal mask, and the scope of application is becoming wider and wider. Because laryngeal mask has the advantages of simple use, less airway stimulation and injury, low probability of misinsertion and shorter operation time, laryngeal mask gradually began to replace tracheal intubation in many places.
Patients undergoing tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy between January 6, 2017 and January 6, 2020 with a LMA were reviewed for safety outcomes by a research team. The team compared two cohorts of patients with LMA and ETT to analyze the effect on operating room times. In 1042 patients, the probability of laryngeal spasm and other related symptoms decreased by 1.5%, while patients undergoing LMA surgery spent less time in the operating room.
